FIVE MILE RADIUS was the original name for dirtlab and today, we're bringing it back. Inspired by the Ghandin philosophy that people should try to build using materials sourced within 5 miles of the site, Five Mile Radius is to grow to become an architectural collective that experiments with this idea. Like Gandhi, we believe in the social, economic and environmental benefits of building with what you've already got..... 💪

Through his design practice, @heferporky works to preserve local artisanal skills and vernacular craftsmanship. He collaborates extensively with artisans and empowers craft groups and small manufacturers to reconnect with their creativity. The ’Spun’ chair, like all of his work made from Kooboo cane, is made by talented weavers at the Cape Society for the Blind, an NGO in Cape Town. If you’re looking for great Apprenticeship training in Plumbing, Heating & Ventilation, or Electrical Installation you really need to make sure you check out EAS Mechanical.
The training company was started 5 years ago by Eamon Wilson and runs from premises on St James Mill Road. Over 100 Apprentices currently train at @easmech .....and such is their reputation, that day release students drive in from as far away as Lincolnshire to be part of the programme.
Apprentices typically attend for 1️⃣ day a week and spend the rest of the week with their Apprenticeship employer.
EAS Mechanical mainly deal with Apprentices who have found an employer and now need a training programme. That said, they are always happy to let you know of any vacancies they are aware of.
I met with Eamon last week and it was great to hear about the plans for the business and have a look around the training facilities. It was clear to see the commitment EAS Mechanical has to deliver a top quality training programme.
They have already seen one of their Apprentices, Dan Martins, be chosen to represent 🇬🇧 in the Plumbing and Heating category of World Skills where he travelled out to Abu Dhabi to compete!
