I’ve learned a lot these past 4 months.
I’ve found a great appreciation for graduate students. I knew the challenges I was going to face going into a PhD program; I would have to learn to think like a scientist and the expectations of my work would be put on a higher standard. But adjusting to a completely different world was something I was not expecting. The past 4 months have challenged and pushed me in ways that made me really see the world I was about to dive into.
I had several goals this semester. One was to better communicate my science to an audience that both senior scientist as well as someone who is just learning biology would understand. I also wanted to develop my techniques, be more effective in the lab and have a greater understanding of biology. Over the past four months, I’ve had to orally present many different types of work from journal articles to data. I found that through this practice, I was able to enhance my public speaking skills to a diverse audience.
During each of the two 8-week rotations, I was able to learn the valuable skills of being organized, managing my time and being efficient in the lab as I tried to juggle experiments, reading important articles and going to class.
The most important goal I completed this semester having a greater understanding of biology has a whole. I have learned so much from listening to senior scientists, graduate students and my peers about their research and the importance of our field.
Leaving this semester has lead me to appreciate the opportunity I have here at The University of Arizona. I have learned more than I could of ever imagined. If I could go back, I wouldn’t tell myself to do it any differently. Graduate school is hard, but working through the struggles and finding your place within your program and peers is what, I’ve learned, will get you through it. The @uofa is such a special place and I wouldn’t want to do my graduate degree anywhere else. ...
