For compostable fiber bowls (like those used at Chipotle), the paper fibers are too short to be remade into new products.⠀
For compostable plastics (like Greenware cups), they're plant-based, instead of oil-based. Since they're not actually plastic, they can't go with the plastic recycle; doing so contaminates the plastic recycling.⠀
In addition, most composters don't want this material. It doesn't add nutritional value to the compost, takes up a lot of space in the piles, doesn't break down as advertised, and often contains high levels of PFAS, a chemical that farmers don't want in their soil. ⠀
Also, according to USDA organic standards, compost made with compostable packaging cannot be sold as organic, so accepting these materials limits the buyers for the finished compost product.⠀
So what to do? If you have composting, find out if compostables are accepted in your program. Otherwise, it's trash. ...
